Did you know that 1.8 billion people still don't have safe water? We have it on tap, but they have to walk miles to collect it in buckets - and even then, the water source is usually contaminated. Every day people get sick and die from water-related illnesses. We can help fix this!
As a water/wastewater engineer and avid bike rider, I'm really excited about Scotty's ride. This 13-year-old is biking across the country to raise money for clean water! I couldn't join him for the whole ride (eight weeks is a long time), but I can join him from Greenville to Charleston, so that's what I'm doing. I'm asking you to join me too, by donating.
I have seen firsthand how Water Mission provides sustainable, safe water systems. Would you consider making a donation to help them serve more people? Scotty's overall fundraising goal is $500,000, and I'm shooting for $4,320 - twenty dollars for every mile I bike.
Please help me get there, and share this page with your friends and family - the more people who see it the better! :)
Answers to questions you might have:
Q: When is the trip?
A: I'll start in Greenville the morning of Thursday, July 27, and end in Charleston on Tuesday, August 1. Click About > Map above for more details about our route. The other riders started in California on June 3 and are working their way across the US right now.
Q: How far are you riding?
A: 216 miles total (https://goo.gl/maps/X7SQdhZfu4A2). That's why I set my fundraising goal at $4,320, or $20 per mile.
Q: What bike are you riding?
A: My trusty commuter - a 1983 Specialized Expedition touring bike (pictured above). It rides like a dream. :)
Q: Have you ever biked this far before?
A: Nope! But I bike to work year round (11 miles round trip), and have started doing longer rides on the weekends to build up my endurance. I'm confident I'll be ready for this ride by the end of July.
Q: Scotty sounds like a cool kid - can you tell me more about him?
A: He is indeed cool. The Post & Courier did a great write-up about him here: http://www.postandcourier.com/sports/hanahan--year-old-scotty-parker-aims-to-change-the/article_838bb846-46d1-11e7-b599-0f84f9342bc0.html.
Q: How can I follow your progress during the ride?
A: I plan to track my rides on Strava and also post updates on Facebook, so look for me in those places if you want to get my updates. You can also click the About > Map link above for a live tracker of the group's location at any time (even now!).
