About the Kinungi Community

Kinungi Community is found in Nakuru County, Naivasha Sub-County, approximately 330 km from our Country office with a population of approximately 4,998 people. The current failed system was implemented by the National Government in 1990. Currently, most community members are forced to carry water for drinking, washing hands and cooking to school every day because there is no water in the school. Due to insufficient water in the community, there are fears that if a cholera outbreak arises, it might sweep through the whole community. In view of this, a safe water project is being proposed, so that the water can be treated and taken closer to the community.

Another huge struggle with this area of Kenya is high fluoride in underground water. High fluoride can cause mottled teeth in children and long term ingestion can cause bone disease (pain and tenderness of the bones). Elevacted fluoride intakes can also have more serious effects on skeletal tissues. Skeletal fluorosis (with adverse changes in bone structure) may be observed when drinking water contains 3-6 mg of fluoride per liter. Crippling skeletal fluorosis usually develops only where drinking water contains over 10 mg of fluoride per liter (IPCS,1984).

An engineering and community development assessment has been completed by Water Mission Kenya (WMK). This work included identifying water sources in the area, topographic measurements, community meetings, interviewing residents, collection of water use and other demographic data, and inspection of the area.

We propose to revive and extend the existing system from the current borehole using the existing pump. We will also add water treatment to bring all the parameters within National Standards, including fluoride. Water will be supplied to the Kinungi Primary School, Kinungi Secondary School, Market Kiosk, Community Kiosk, and the storage tank area.

Phase One of this project is estimated to cost $75,000 USD. All of the proceeds of this walk will go towards this one project. This is a starting point for fundraising and if anything over 75,000 is raised we will put towards phase two of the project. We look forward to watching the God we serve provide exceedingly more than we could ever ask or imagine for the community of Kunungi.
