2.2 billion people around the world lack access to safe water. That's one-third of the world's population.
Everyday, millions of women and children in developing countries walk an average of 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to retrieve water for their family's daily needs. In most cases, even after walking for miles and miles with heavy buckets of water, the water they have to drink is contaminated.
We walk to simulate the trek and stand in solidarity with those who must take it. We walk to bring awareness of the situation. As a result, more people will understand the challenges they face.
Hudson Valley Walk for Water is an opportunity to help raise money to build water purification systems for communities along the Amazon River Basin in Peru as well as to share the Christian message of hope and salvation. The Grace Community Church in Lake Katrine and the Hurley Reformed Church are sponsoring the Walk. All proceeds go to the Water Mission, a Christian engineering non profit based in Charleston, SC.
Water is the world's most basic resource. It has the power to give life—and take it. But there is hope. We believe that we can end the global water crisis in our lifetime. With the help of supporters and partners Water Mission has served more than 5,000,000 people in 56 countries with lasting safe water solutions.
Water Mission is grateful to have Walk for Water events in many locations around the world! Take a look at the map below to see how many communities and partners are participating with us in 2020:
